WE'VE GOT GRANTS!

The College of Nursing received an award from NINR to establish a Center for
Biobehavioral Research in Self-Management of Cardiopulmonary Disease. Funding is for five years, for a projected total of $1,285,376.
Debra Moser will direct the Center; Ellen Hahn is co-director of the administrative core. Terry Lennie will direct the biobehavioral outcomes core, with Susan Frazier as co-director. Lynne Hall will direct the data analysis and dissemination core, with Mary Kay Rayens as co-director. Darlene Welsh is PI for the first Center pilot project; later projects will be conducted by Misook Chung and Ann Peden.

Our new totals for FY 08 are: Submitted, $1,499,586; awarded, $3,409,854; received, $1,121,210. An additional $1.95 million is still pending from proposals submitted in FY 07.

Recent submissions

Debra Anderson submitted a three-year, $955,442 proposal to NIOSH for a study titled, “Nutrition and Risks for CVD, Obesity, and Injury in Long-Haul Truckers.” Terry Lennie, Mary Kay Rayens, and Deborah Reedare co-investigators.

Misook Chung submitted a $10,000 proposal to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for, “Effects of a Cognitive-Educational Therapy on Outcomes in Patient-Spouse Dyads.”

Jia-Rong Wu (postdoctoral fellow) also submitted a $10,000 proposal to AACN, titled, “Effect of a Theory-Based, Medication-taking Behavior Feedback Intervention on Medication Adherence and Outcomes in Patients with Heart Failure.”


Research Calendar

Dec. 14: 9:30-11 a.m., Research Scholarship Group, annual holiday brunch. John Roark of the Proposal Development Office will discuss the Community of Science (COS).

Jan. 11: Dr. Ann Coker, Verizon Wireless Chair, College of Medicine, will present, “What Interventions Work to Improve Outcomes for Abused Women?”

Jan. 15: Deadline for online submission of abstracts for the 2008 National State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research, to be held in Washington in October.

Feb. 5: Deadline for R01 grant submissions.
