Emily Durbin, undergraduate research intern, is a coauthor on a publication by the Tobacco Policy Research group.

Ph.D. students Muna Hammash, Jan Odom-Forren, Lynn Roser, and Carol Smith are coauthors on a RICH Heart group publication. Angela Wu, postdoctoral fellow, is coauthor on another RICH Heart publication.

Presentations

Maggie Roberts, undergraduate research intern, had a poster and paper presentation, “The Effect of Nutritional Support on Weaning Outcome in Adult Patients Receiving Mechanical Ventilation,” at the 2008 American Association of Critical Care Nurses National Teaching Institute in Chicago in May. Co-authors included intern Ashley Wellman and Ph.D. students Sarah Kelly, Liz Sturgeon, and Amani Khalil, as well as faculty members Susan Frazier and Melanie Hardin-Pierce. The same group had another poster presented by Hardin-Pierce, “The Effect of Glycemic Control on Weaning Outcome in Adult Patients Receiving Mechanical Ventilation.” Both abstracts are published in the current issue of the American Journal of Critical Care.

Undergraduate research interns Jennifer Baumgartner and Christina Cummings were selected for oral presentations at the UK Showcase of Undergraduate Scholars in April.

Connie Lamb (Ph.D. candidate) was invited to do a presentation at Shriner’s Hospital, where she will display her SNRS poster, “Health-Related Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents Diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy: Measuring the Child’s Perception.”

Ph.D. students Sarah Kelly, Amanda Fallin, and Peggy Riley had abstracts accepted for presentation at the American Public Health Association meeting to be held in San Diego in October 2008.

Activities/Honors/Awards

Students from Ellen Hahn's Health Policy class attended a rally to increase the tobacco tax during the Spring 2008 General Assembly in Frankfort.

Susie Adams (Ph.D. 2007) will be inducted into the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in June.

Ph.D. student Rebecca Dekker received a $15,000 Philanthropic Educational Organization International Scholar Award.

Evelyn Parrish (Ph.D. 2008) received the Rising Star of Scholarship and Research award from Sigma Theta Tau.

Suzette Sewell (Ph.D. 2008) was invited to Capitol Hill in February as an advocate for arthritis. She met with Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning and Congressman John Yarmuth to discuss the needs of people suffering from bone disease and arthritis.
