The purpose of this pilot study is to develop a case-based compendium of stories of injured truck drivers. These data will be used to support an R21 and R01 to develop and test a translational intervention research project utilizing narrative simulations to reduce trucker injury. Narrative text and video data will be collected from interviews with commercial truck drivers who have experienced work-related injury not related to motor vehicle crashes. Participants will be recruited through an existing list of truckers who have agreed to be contacted for future studies, and through a UK health provider who conducts Department of Transportation physicals. Interviews will be held by telephone or in person at truck stop restaurants and truck shows. Narrative text data on injury epidemiology and physical, psychological, and economic outcomes will be collected via audiotape. Video data will include footage of equipment and/or environment where injury occurred when possible, and any fabrication of specialized devices or work modifications the participant used to prevent future injury. Forty participants will each complete a single interview. Data will be analyzed for content and themes. These data do not exist now and are essential for the development of realistic and applicable narrative simulations. Plans are in place to share the data with other UK researchers interested in the occupational injury and health status of truckers. Currently, the Colleges of Nursing and Public Health are conducting research in this field, and faculty and students are holding regular meetings to advance this program of research.
