In 2001 NIOSH funded the Nurse Agriculture Education
Project, a five-year endeavor focused on improving the
agricultural health and safety knowledge base of nurses in
the Southern U.S. The project implemented multiple ways to
address that aim. Interest in the project has grown
steadily, as evidenced by invitations from nursing journals
to write articles for their peer-reviewed journals and from
nurses across the nation interested in opportunities to
participate in the project. The second phase will continue
the successful parts of the project and reframe the project
(based on evaluation of Phase 1) to: (1) expand to a
national scope and, (2) tailor the project to target
undergraduate nurse scholars to work alongside seasoned
nurse researchers in internships focused on agricultural
health and safety. By preparing entry level nurses with this
knowledge, the agricultural public will benefit more
directly, since entry level nurses are more likely to have
direct and prolonged interface with patients. The symbiotic
interface of research and clinical practice used in the
project will facilitate the research to practice (r2p)
concept advocated by NIOSH.
The aims of Phase 2 are to: (1) increase the agricultural
health and safety knowledge of nurse educators, researchers,
and nurse students; (2) provide formats for the education of
nurse educators and nurse researchers about agricultural
illness/injury prevention; (3) provide opportunities for
students to participate in agricultural health research
based on nursing principles; (4) develop a networked cadre
of agricultural health nurses; and (5) determine how nurse
educators use agricultural health within the context of
their undergraduate and graduate curricula in nursing
(continued tracking in the South).
Methods include multiple educational venues (Web,
continuing education, visiting faculty), student and faculty
scholarships, and consulting service for agricultural
nursing research. Evaluation of the project will include
surveys of nurses participating in the project, count of
nurse led peer reviewed agricultural health articles in
nursing journals, and number of requests for information or
services. A nurse evaluation team will provide guidance to
the project. The intended goals of the project are to
increase nurses’ knowledge of agricultural health hazards,
form a nurse based agricultural health group, and foster
nurse-led and trans-disciplinary agricultural health
research. The symbiotic interface of research and clinical
practice used in the project will facilitate the research to
practice (r2p) concept advocated by NIOSH.
