The purpose of this demonstration project is to design and
test an office-based farm injury/illness prevention program
that can be delivered by staff in a rural family practice
setting without adding time or financial burden on staff or
clients.
Family practice physicians and staff are the main
providers of health care in rural areas. They are in prime
positions to deliver farm health and safety messages to
their clients. A literature search revealed that some effort
has been extended to provide educational programs to rural
physicians, but no literature was discovered to
document that this education translated into the practice of
these providers.
This project is delivered in partnership with a rural
family practice in Mercer County, Ky. During the course of
the project, office staff will collect farm health and
safety information from clients, deliver farm health
promotion products and education, and learn about farm
health risks. A mailed survey (N=600) will be conducted with
patients in regard to their exposure to farm health and
safety messages while in the office; a chart audit will be
conducted for evidence of farm health information; and a
pre- and post-test of staff will be done to measure their
knowledge of farm health and safety. Monthly group meetings
will guide the project and serve as a formative evaluation
strategy.
