The project addresses comprehensive clean indoor air and radon policy change in Boone, Campbell
and Kenton Counties (pop. 351,857) in Northern Kentucky. Secondhand smoke exposure is the third
and radon is the second leading preventable cause of lung cancer. University of Kentucky’s Clean
Indoor Air Partnership (CIAP) has been a collaborating partner for the past two years with the
Northern Kentucky smoke-free coalition, representing nearly 2,000 individuals and 40 businesses
organizations. The CIAP also has worked with the Northern Kentucky Radon Program to draft a
regulation to require certification for radon testing and mitigation. The project aims to build
capacity for a smoke-free ordinance campaign in 2008-09 by diversifying the coalition which will
involve the recruitment and training of popular opinion leaders from minority communities and key
influential business leaders in Northern Kentucky. Secondly, the project will build capacity for
radon policy change (adoption of building codes mandating use of radon resistant new construction
materials) by developing a broad-based local coalition and applying clean indoor air advocacy
strategies. The Northern Kentucky Health Department tobacco and radon programs will partner with
the new Northern Kentucky Office of the Kentucky Center for Smoke-free Policy and the CIAP
to advance evidence-based tobacco and radon policy change.
