Associate Dean Honored for Contributions to Mental Health Services

Patricia B. Howard, associate dean of the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) programs, was honored in October as one of 10 University of Louisville Alumni Fellows for 2009.

According to the University of Louisville, Alumni Fellows Awards are “bestowed to graduates who are exemplary ambassadors for their University of Louisville schools or colleges. Honorees must have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields; made significant contributions to their communities on a local, state, national or international level; demonstrated integrity in their personal life; and gained the respect of others."

Howard received her undergraduate nursing degree from U of L and her master’s and PhD from the University of Kentucky College of Nursing

It has been my distinct honor to study and serve at both UK and Uof L because one of my career goals was to contribute to the welfare of the people of the Commonwealth. I am deeply indebted to my faculty colleagues in nursing at both universities for contributing to any success on my part that led to this prestigious award, " Howard said.

Her research, all in the mental health services arena, has been published in the Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, International Psychiatry, Issues in Mental Health Nursing, and Psychiatric Services. She also has presented her research at regional, national and international levels.

She is a 1991 American Nurses Foundation Scholar and founding board member of the International Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses. Since 1995, Howard has served as a research consultant and on various committees for the Kentucky Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services, Eastern State Hospital in Lexington, Ky., and Central State Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

Howard’s clinical area is psychiatric-mental health nursing with an emphasis on informal caregivers and public mental health service delivery systems.
