Jane Marie Kirschling, R.N., D.N.S., came on board August 14, 2006 as the new dean of the College of Nursing.

Kirschling is former dean of the University of Southern Maine College of Nursing and Health Professions. She served as chief academic officer of the College, which includes undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, and undergraduate programs in health sciences, radiation therapy, recreation and leisure, and sports medicine.

Kirschling previously served as associate dean at the University of Rochester School of Nursing and Oregon Health Sciences University School of Nursing, where she provided academic oversight for baccalaureate, master’s post-masters, and doctoral nursing programs; oversight of student affairs and office of evaluation; recruitment of academic and clinical track teaching faculty, and evaluation of assigned faculty.

A psychiatric nurse, she has published numerous academic research papers on the experience of terminal illness among patients and caregivers and the grief process, among other topics. 

Kirschling completed the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program in 2003, and the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education, MLE Management and Leadership in Education in 2001. She is a reviewer for the Journal of Nursing Education.

She earned her D.N.S. from the Indiana University School of Nursing with a specialty in psychiatric/mental health nursing. Her M.S.N. is from the Indiana University School of Nursing as well, with a specialty in community mental health nursing. She earned her B.S.N. from Viterbo College in LaCrosse, WI.
