Dissertation (Ph.D. program only)

  • Your major professor will guide the planning, conduct, and reporting of your dissertation research with your advisory committee's advice.
  • Your advisory committee will ask you to defend your dissertation proposal.
  • As a Ph.D. candidate you must register for 2 credit hours dissertation residency credit each semester until you complete and defend your dissertation (NUR 767). Students are required to complete a minimum of two semesters of NUR 767.
  • As a Ph.D. candidate who has passed the qualifying examinations and enrolled in NUR 767 you can have your ID validated as a full-time student. See the Schedule of Classes for procedure.
  • You should obtain a copy of Instructions for the Preparation of Theses and Dissertations and Doctor of Musical Arts Projects. A hardcopy is available from the Graduate School office. Also, see the Guidelines for Scholarly Work in this Handbook.

Manuscript Option Dissertation

A minimum of three manuscripts, at least one of which must present original research findings, plus an introduction and a conclusion, are required. To meet graduate school requirements, the manuscript option dissertation must meet the same formatting guidelines as a traditional dissertation (e.g., abstract, table of contents, list of tables and figures, margin requirements, etc.)

Other Dissertation Information

  • Members of your advisory committee, and others who provided assistance with your research should be recognized in Acknowledgments to the report(s) of your research.
  • Your dissertation should be filed with University Microfilms (information available from the Graduate School).
  • Allow a MINIMUM of six months from giving your major professor a first draft for review to the date for your final examination.
  • The Graduate School requires that you provide two copies of your dissertation (106 Gillis Bldg.). Both copies are forwarded to the University Library for processing. A fee for binding your dissertation is assessed.
  • You will find Turabian's Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations useful as a supplement to the APA Publication Manual. This latter book is the primary guide for reporting your dissertation research. For matters not addressed by APA (e.g., table of contents), Turabian is useful.
