OTHER RESOURCES

Biostatistics Unit
The Biostatistics Consulting Unit provides statistical consultation for graduate students in the medical center. The services offered free of charge to graduate students include consulting on short-term, non-funded projects, and advising on issues such as study design, sample size requirements, and the appropriate statistical analyses for a study. The unit also provides data entry services for a nominal fee. Your faculty advisor will assist you in making the appropriate contact with this unit.

Microcomputer Lab
A microcomputer lab in room 604J of the Audiovisual Library in the College of Nursing Building is for student use. This facility contains IBM compatible and MacIntosh personal computers, printers, and a variety of software. The microcomputer room is available to all students of the medical center's colleges during the following hours: Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m.; Friday 7:30 a.m. - 9:45 p.m.; Saturday. 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m.; Sunday 1-11:30 p.m. These hours are subject to change, especially during holidays and examination periods. Summer hours are shortened.

Computing Center
The Computing Center is located in McVey Hall, off the west end of Funkhouser Drive. The Information Systems Help Desk in 110 McVey Hall hands out a wide variety of free introductory guides and computer manuals to facilitate your computer work and networking connections. The help desk also provides communications software and other programs for which the University has site licenses to staff or students only. Be sure to bring a diskette if you want to get a copy of such software. The help desk is open during regular business hours Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Call 257-2249 or send e-mail to helpdesk@uky.edu for more information.

UK Online Internet is a service which will allow students dial-up access to Internet services from home or from dormitory rooms. Call UK Online at (800) 241-1009 for further information.

The Computing Center houses the IBM 9672 mainframe computer, the HP SPP 2200, the Convex/HP Exemplar, and a number of smaller Unix machines and network server machines. These computers are used mostly for advanced research and e-mail applications. If you should need to work on one of these systems (and if you don't already have an account set up for you automatically through a course you are taking), you can go to User Account Services in 113 McVey Hall and present a picture ID to request an account on one of the Computing Center systems. Most students, however, will find that computer resources available in the various microlabs around campus will meet their needs. Consultants for these various systems at the Computing Center are also available in the different microlabs.

Each graduate student in the College of Nursing who needs to work with statistical software such as SAS and SPSS on one of the Convex/HP systems must get her/his own account by presenting a picture ID at User Account Services in 130 McVey Hall. SAS and SPSS are also available for purchase through our UK site license, for use on PC machines.

The SSTARS (Social Science, Teaching, and Research Statistics) Computing Center, including statistical computing, is located in the William T. Young Library. For more information, contact Aric Schadler, statistics consultant, by e-mail at schadler@email.uky.edu or by phone at 257-2641, or you may visit the Computing Center's Web site.

The University publishes a brochure titled Policy Governing Access to and Use of University of Kentucky Computing Resources, which addresses such issues as account privacy and ethical use of computing resources. All University of Kentucky students should receive a copy of this brochure. To get additional copies, check in the microlabs or at the help desk in 110 McVey Hall.
