Is it i.e. or e.g.?

Among the most commonly misused Latin abbreviations are i.e. and e.g. These terms stand for the Latin phrases id est (that is) and exemplia gratia (for example). They are not interchangeable. Many people use i.e. all the time, even when they mean “for example.” When you use one of these abbreviations, read your sentence substituting the English phrase to check whether you chose the right one.
