Career Development
It is important to note that national trends
suggest that a significant portion of trainees nationally do not end up
as tenure track faculty at Carnegie Class I Research Universities. The
Biotech/Pharmaceutical industry and high quality undergraduate colleges
have become significant as employers of recent postdoctoral fellows, and
a number of our trainees have followed this course. The lunch meetings
we hold between trainees and seminar speakers provide both predoctorals
and postdoctorals the opportunity to observe different perspectives from
visiting scientists and learn about their career paths and experiences.
In addition, the University has a postdoctoral forum in which a host of
topics related to career paths are presented to primarily the
postdoctoral trainees, but also predoctorals attend. Each department
provides training in grant writing in which trainees write a competitive
grant application, which is then critiqued by fellow trainees and
faculty.
The Center for Clinical and Translational Science
(CCTS) has a formal Training, Education and Mentoring (TEAM) program.
This program is integrated with existing health-related graduate
programs at UK to provide health-based professionals with access to
resources and training opportunities. It reaches across a broad range
of scientific disciplines, and students and faculty in health-related
graduate programs providing them with access to clinical environments,
health professionals, and clinical and translational training
opportunities. CCTS also offers on-going conferences dedicated to
professional advancement. In summary, our training program provides
trainees with skills and aptitudes that facilitate the development of
trainee careers. |
