The Department of Neurology offers instruction in clinical neurosciences during all four years of undergraduate instruction in the College of Medicine. During four years of medical education, the student can become competent in dealing with neurological problems of adults and children and even choose to participate in one of the many research programs, to develop a better understanding of the nervous system in health and disease. The goal of the Neurology Department is to see to it that all students acquire practical experience in clinical evaluation of the nervous system function, from the earliest stages of brain maturation to final stages of senescence.

A required course in neurosciences during the first year of the medical curriculum integrates relevant topics in human neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with clinical correlates in neurology and psychiatry. Teaching methodologies include lectures, small group discussion, laboratory, and self-study units. In the course, all students are introduced to techniques of the neurological exam. These skills are refined when students serve as clinical clerks or acting interns in the ambulatory and inpatient neurology services at the University of Kentucky Hospital and Veterans Administration Medical Center.
