MEDICAL STUDENT CLERKSHIP OBJECTIVES

Objectives

Students will:

Demonstrate through successful completion of course requirements, an understanding of the principles and skills underlying the recognition and basic management of major neurologic diseases.

Demonstrate by means of the required oral and written presentations, the ability to:

  • Obtain a complete and reliable history
  • Deliver a clear and concise oral presentation for a patient’s history and examination
  • Prepare a clear and concise written presentation of a patient’s history and examination

Demonstrate to observing residents and faculty the ability to perform a reliable neurologic examination.

Demonstrate through clinical interactions with attending physicians and house staff, and successful completion of the NBME shelf examination the ability to:

  • Recognize symptoms that may signify neurologic disease
  • Distinguish normal from abnormal findings on a neurologic examination
  • Localize the likely site or sites in the nervous system where a lesion could produce a patient’s symptoms and signs
  • Formulate a differential diagnosis
  • Review and interpret the medical literature pertinent to specific issues of patient care

In addition, the student should demonstrate an awareness of the:

  • Use and interpretation of common tests used in diagnosing neurologic disease
  • Principles underlying a systematic approach to the management of common neurologic diseases, including situations that are potential emergencies.
  • Situations in which it is appropriate to request neurologic consultation

Demonstrate an understanding of the practice of professional behavior through their interactions with patients, patients’ families, and the staff as observed by the attendings and residents.
