We are pleased to welcome you to our Child Neurology program information page. Lexington is a family friendly university town and the center for children’s services for a large, primarily rural area.
We remain true to the principles developed by Dr. David B. Clark when he brought his team from Johns Hopkins to establish our Department and our training programs in 1967:
1. Our physicians feel a special responsibility to the underserved children in Kentucky’s Appalachian counties.
2. Child and adult neurology are co-equal halves of a single discipline and should be taught though an integrated training program.
We have continued to be guided by these principles. Our child neurology program is unusual in its integration of the adult and child experiences. Our incoming residents begin their residency on the child neurology service. After becoming oriented on the child service our residents go on to do their12 months of adult neurology interwoven with child neurology experiences throughout the 3 years of the program. This keeps our residents in touch with their pediatric expertise and helps them to better understand how their adult neurology experiences contribute to a better understanding of the neurological disorders of infants and children. It also gives them an ongoing and strong relationship with the adult neurology residents and easy access to the subspecialty skills of the adult neurology faculty.
All of our child neurology residents and attending physicians regularly participate in our rural, Appalachian clinics. These clinics are run by local nurses and staff. Moreover with the assistance of the Commonwealth of Kentucky we are able to fund services, tests and medications for any Kentucky child with neurological complaints or disease regardless of the family’s insurance or ability to pay. In part because of our large, Appalachian referral area we see a substantial number of children with unusual neurological disorders.
Application
We accept one resident per year and participate in the San Francisco Match. Two years of pediatric training or one year of pediatrics and one year of neuroscience research are prerequisites for entry into our program. Our Department of Pediatrics offers a specific 2 year program for physicians interested in child neurology and gives special consideration to residents who are accepted to our program and who wish to do their pediatric training in Lexington. If you are interested in doing your pediatric training here you will need to apply separately to the Pediatrics program through ERAS. However, all interviews for both programs will be arranged through us.
Candace Allen is able to answer questions and will arrange interviews after applications have been received from the San Francisco match.
