| In addition to a commitment to providing the highest standard of patient care and serving as a tertiary referral center for this region, the Department is committed to advancing medical knowledge. Strong collaborations have been established with the basic science departments at the University of Kentucky, including, but not limited to Anatomy and Neurobiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Microbiology/Immunology. Many of the members of the Department of Neurology hold joint appointments in one of these basic science departments. Additionally, strong collaborations exist for both clinical and basic science investigations with the Departments of Radiology and Surgery (Neurosurgery). Studies of Alzheimer's disease, AIDS dementia, epilepsy, cognitive neurology, aging, and stroke are being conducted at the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Science Center by members of the Department of Neurology. State-of-the-art clinical therapeutic trials are being conducted by members of the Department for stroke, epilepsy, headache, the neurological complications of AIDS, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Young investigators joining the Department have been very successful in obtaining independent funding. The research interests of the Department members transcend the areas of their clinical expertise. |
