We all want healthy children CHILD NEUROLOGY PROGRAM

Since 1967 the child neurologists at the University of Kentucky have been serving the families of eastern and central Kentucky through direct patient care and research. We bring a unique combination of neuroscience and pediatric expertise to our patients. In Lexington we see out-patients along with the other neurologists in the Kentucky Clinic. For our in-patients we utilize the Kentucky Children’s Hospital where we have two dedicated video/EEG rooms. When the new Neuroscience Clinic is completed in June, 2009 we will join the pediatric neurosurgeons in the children’s section of that clinic.

Outside of Lexington we conduct child neurology clinics for Appalachian children in the following Eastern Kentucky locations: Ashland, Barbourville, Hazard, Manchester, Morehead, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, and Somerset. These clinics are conducted by local staff in
conjunction with the
Kentucky Commission for Children with Special Healthcare Needs and funding is available to help pay for a child’s medicines, tests and visits. We also conduct a Commission child neurology clinic for Central Kentucky children in Lexington.

Members of the child neurology faculty have specialized skills in the management of epilepsy, neuromuscular disease and headache. Common disorders that we see include epilepsy, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies, migraine and stroke. The child neurology program is certified to train one child neurology resident in each year of the three year program. In addition, adult neurology, pediatric, psychiatry and neurosurgery residents train with our faculty and residents from other related disciplines are also welcome. All third year medical students have a month-long neurology rotation and are welcome to spend time on child neurology and to attend our clinics. Many fourth year students elect to spend time on child neurology.
