Research Interests: Investigating the potential role of oral disease as a
risk factor in the development of dementia
In the last
twenty years many studies have been conducted to investigate the role of
oral disease, specifically periodontal disease, on several systemic
diseases, including stroke, coronary heart disease, and pre-term birth.
Research suggests that the chronic systemic inflammation associated with gum
disease increases the risk for these diseases. Dr. Stein conducts research
with the Sander’s Brown Center on Aging and the Nun Study to investigate
oral disease as a potential risk factor for dementia.
In
addition, she is
involved in scholarly work in creating software and texts relating basic
science and clinical dentistry, particularly in the area of local anesthesia
and head and neck anatomy.
