• The Center renames the Muscle Journal Club as the Muscle Forum. The new title is a better description of our interactive meetings. Carole Moncman and Gretchen Wolff both suggested the new name.
   
  
• Laura Gilliam (a PhD student in the Reid lab) publishes Doxorubicin acts through tumor necrosis factor receptor subtype 1 (TNFR1) to cause dysfunction of murine skeletal muscle in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
   
  
• Gerard Supinksi and Leigh Ann Callahan receive the Center for Muscle Biology's second NIH Challenge Grant titled "Evaluation and treatment of skeletal muscle weakness in critically ill patients".
   
  
• Karyn Esser and Ken Campbell presented a Plenary Lecture and an invited seminar respectively at the Workshop on Multi-Scale Muscle Mechanics in Woods Hole, MA.

  
   
  

• Francisco Andrade (Co-PI), Karyn Esser (Co-PI) and 4 collaborators from the Center for Muscle Biology receive an RC1 Challenge Grant from NIH/NIEHS.

August, 2009

• Charlotte Peterson (PI), Esther Dupont-Versteegden, Karyn Esser, and John McCarthy receive a new NIH R21 grant to study the role of satellete cells in muscle maintenance.
   
  
• Jorge Gamboa, MD, successfully defends his PhD thesis. Dr.(²?) Gamboa completed his PhD in just 3 years while working with Paco Andrade.

• The date for the First Annual Center for Muscle Biology Fall Retreat is announced. It will be held on Wednesday October 28th. More details will be published here as soon as they become available.
   
  
• Laura Gilliam receives a Pre-Doctoral Fellowship from the Great Rivers Affiliate of the American Heart Association. Her project is titled "Intracellular mechanisms of doxorubicin-induced respiratory muscle dysfunction".

  
   
  

• Leo Ferreira's Postdoctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association is extended to a third year.

  
   
  

• Mihail Mitov is awarded a 2 year Postdoctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association to investigate "Gender specific mechanisms leading to elevated myocardial stiffness in Type I Diabetes".

  
   
  

• Mike Reid is selected as a Southeastern Conference Academic Consortium 2009-2010 Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow. This program is designed to help the most promising individuals at Southeastern institutions to become future leaders in higher education.

• A group of Center Investigators submit a Program Project Grant to NIH. Mike Reid is the Principal Investigator.

  
   
  

• Ken Campbell is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Physiology.
   
  
• PGY630: Advanced Skeletal Muscle Physiology finishes at the end of the UK academic semester.

  Drs. Esser and Campbell, the course leaders, congratulate the 4 graduate students and 3 postdocs that participated in the class for making it through 34 hours of formal course-work!

  Artur and Anastasia Indzhykulian welcomed their son Timur on Sunday 4/26/09 at 12:26 am. Timur weighed 7 lb 6 oz and was 21 inches long. Mother and baby are doing fine.

• Karyn Esser is promoted to Full Professor in the Department of Physiology.
