3rd Year Medical Student Surgery Skills

* Skill must be completed correctly two (2) consecutive times and then once again with instructor present.

For skill #10, check each task box after completing each set:

• You must complete 5 of the 10 skills to earn the five (5) points for this surgical skills activity.
• Please make and turn in two copies of this form (one to the lab and one to the Surgery Education Office).

**Description of DVD Tasks:

Task 1 – Pick up and move 10 grains of rice from one circle to the next and place them at the same angle as originally found.

Task 2 – Move rice back to original circle with eyes closed.

Task 3 – Repeat tasks 1 and 2 but with other hand.

Task 4 – Practice holding scissors in manner described.

Task 5 – Close eyes; feel tip of scissors coming together.

Task 6 – Barely nick t-shirt, cut 1/8 inch 10 times, cut 1/4 inch 10 times, cut 1/2 inch 10 times (use left hand as fulcrum).

Task 7 – Complete task 6 with opposite hand.

Task 8 – Follow instructions on clamp introduction.

Task 9 – Use clamp on soft tissue.

Task 10 – Follow instructions on needle holder introduction.

Task 11 – Proper grasp of needle holder.

Task 12 – Pass needle through two layer target without moving tissue (10 times).

Task 13 – Practice re-grabs (20 times) and needle alignment.

Task 14 – Practice going through both sides (20 times).

Task 15 – Backhand: practice going through one side (10 times); practice going through both sides (10 times).
