Jim Hoskins is the information technology manager for the UK Center for Advanced Training & Simulation (CATS) and the Director of the Training Center. He previously managed the Student Computer Laboratory for the Office of Academic Affairs in the College of Medicine. Mr. Hoskins’ task is to provide not only an efficient teaching area for minimally invasive skills, but also to create a pleasant and comfortable environment for students and residents who frequent the facility. The lab features accurate recreations of operating room MIS setup, virtual reality research, CT and MRI 3D reconstruction research, and experimental procedure simulation design. Another of Jim’s responsibilities is to explore the possibilities of using immersive 3D to provide training scenarios for the residents which they could not experience in any other way. CATS is also productively using the latest telesurgery and teleconferencing technology. The University of Kentucky is one of a handful of institutions that have committed so many resources to providing in-depth training and performance tracking of residents and students.
