MIS Skills Training A major component of the Junior curriculum is hands-on practice and qualification in the basic skills highlighted in the lap 101 program. These sessions will be on a walk-in basis in the training laboratory so they will be compliant to each resident's schedule. Lab hours are 8:00 to 5:00 (M-F) and scheduled weekend hours can be arranged if warranted.
SKILL #1 Cannulate a Small Duct
Rubber tubing Pipe cleaners Activity: Segment A: Place pipe cleaner through a plastic tube from right to left. The grasper is used to manipulate the pipe cleaner. The dissector is used to stabilize the tube. (Note: Two graspers can be used.) Segment B: The grasper and dissectors switch hands and the pipe cleaner is passed from left to right. (Note: Two graspers can be used.) Error Definition: Inappropriate hand used Dropped pipe cleaner Time for Completion: For both segments, 40 seconds

SKILL #2 Pegboard with Single Hand Transfer
Foam pegboard Pegs (10) Activity: Segment A: With dominant hand, remove and replace 10 pegs. Segment B: With nondominant hand, remove and replace 10 pegs. Error Definition: Peg dropped Inappropriate hand used Time for Completion: For both segments, 120 seconds

SKILL #3 Pegboard With Peg Pass Foam Peg Board Pegs (10) Activity: Segment A: Remove all pegs with nondominant hand. Pick up peg with dominant hand, transfer to nondominant hand, place in pegboard. Place 10 pegs in Board. Segment B: Remove all pegs with dominant hand. Pick up a Peg with nondominant hand, transfer to dominant hand, place in pegboard. Place 10 pegs in Board. Error Definition: Inappropriate hand used Peg dropped Appropriate transfer not completed Time for Completion: For both segments, 240 seconds

SKILL #4 Rope Pass 34 in. rope (black marks placed with permanent marker at 1 in. intervals) Activity: Segment A: manipulate the length of rope by passing it from one hand to another touching only the white areas of the rope. Segment B: Pass the length of rope in the same manner as segment A, but in the opposite direction. Error Definition: Crossing hands Dropped rope Time for Completion: For both segments, 120 seconds

SKILL #5 Appropriate Bites in Suturing Foam suture target. (The holes should be 0.5 mm in diameter and about 2 to 3 mm apart.) (See video demo for example.) Standard SH needles Activity: Place the needle and suture through one hole and out its opposite hole. Continue through the next target hole and out its opposite hole, and so on, until all pairs of holes have been sutured. Error Definition: Not properly loading the needle Dropped needle Not properly regrasping the needle Not entering or exiting the proper circle Time for Completion: 520 seconds

SKILL #6 Following the Curve of the Needle block of pressed wood with a ring eyelet placed on top of block (block should be placed in a marked circle) Standard SH needles Activity: While passing the needle from one instrument to another, place the needle and suture five times through the eyelet in the same direction without moving the block out of the circle. Error Definition: Moving the block out of the circle Not following the curve of the needle Dropped needle Time for Completion: 500 seconds
