MIS Curriculum
The Center for Minimally
Invasive Surgery has provided laparoscopic training resources
covering didactic materials and dexterity skills for the residents
of the department of surgery since 1999. The CMIS has made it a
high priority issue to provide adequate space, state-of-the-art
equipment, dedicated staff and faculty support, and a detailed
comprehensive curriculum for the residents. The center has been
responsible for both the expenses and the time commitments
required because it is our belief that it is imperative for the
residents to take part in such training due to the nature of
laparoscopic surgery. The skills of instrument manipulation,
determining 3D spatial relationships in a environment with only 2D
feedback, respect for tissue, procedure planning and execution,
and the concept of economy of motion are just a few of the items
that the residents should be comfortable with before they
perform laparoscopic surgery.
Beginning in 2004, the surgical training center
started providing didactic materials associated with the curriculum in a
very convenient way. All materials are delivered by this
web site or provided on DVD or CD media. This page
is the Jump Point to all of the topics that will be covered this year. The site
is rich in multimedia resources and you will need to access it with Internet Explorer version 5 or later. You will also need certain plug-ins to be able to view the materials.
The LAP 101 lessons will require Quicktime for Windows which can be acquired by clicking here------>Quicktime Download.
The video tutorials will require RealOne player version 2
or later which can be acquired by clicking here ----->Real Player Download
The menu to the left is divided into four major categories, Junior curriculum (PGY1 and PGY2), Senior curriculum (PGY3,PGY4, and PGY5), All residents, and Educational Information (Resources that go beyond the curriculum). A quick snapshot of required items and the time you will have to
complete them can be obtained by clicking the curriculum tasks link under the subtitle which pertains to you.
The initial period of the Junior curriculum will include in-depth study of the
LAP 101 lessons created and provided by Ethicon.
The second component of the Junior curriculum will be hands-on practice and qualification in the basic skills highlighted in the
LAP101 program. These sessions will be on a walk-in basis in the training laboratory so they will be
compliant with each resident's schedule. Lab hours are 8 to 5 (M-F ) and
special sessions after hours and on weekends can be arranged.
The final portion of the junior curriculum will be study and practice of the more common MIS procedures. Instruction and lecture will be provided by on-line narrations and PowerPoint presentations. Qualifying will be a two-step procedure that includes practice and certification in the training lab
on the procedure simulations and a 90 percent score on the BlackBoard exams
that evaluates comprehension of the required lectures. Exams may be repeated until the passing score is achieved.
The Senior curriculum will be focused mainly on more advanced laparoscopy procedures and skills. Qualifying will be a two-step procedure that includes practice and certification in the training lab
on the procedure simulations and a 90 percent score on the BlackBoard exams
authored by our attendings. Exams may be repeated as many times as necessary until the passing score is achieved.
We plan for this to be a constantly evolving curriculum, so if you have comments or suggestions you believe would improve the quality of our program, please contact
Jim Hoskins .
