Research Statement:

My current professional interests are teaching and developing teaching material in microbiology, especially in Medical Mycology.

I came to the University of Kentucky in 1971. In the ensuing years I have had joint appointments in the Departments of Community Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology and Pathology. Most of my efforts have been in Clinical Microbiology, serving as Director of the Mycology and Mycobacteriology Laboratories from 1971-1978, when I also became Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory for the University Hospital and served until retirement in 2000.During this time I also participated in teaching medical students in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and Pathology and in the School of Biological Sciences. I also organized a continuing education program in Medical Mycology where from 1971-82 over 1000 participants took 1-4 week lecture-laboratory courses in Medical Mycology. Modifications of these CE courses were given nationally and internationally.

Early in my career, as an employee and officer in the United States Public Health Service, I was involved in the study of the epidemiology of the systemic fungal diseases of the U.S. and the pathogenesis of the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Most of the studies were related to where and how this fungus grew in nature, how humans acquire the disease histoplasmosis and the host/fungus response early in infection. These studies were naturally coupled with improved methods of detecting the organism in its natural habitat and diagnosing the disease. These research activities continued when I came to the University of Kentucky to work with a group of medical mycologists in the Division of Medical Mycology, Department of Community Medicine.
