Research statement: Our laboratory studies how cells interact with their environments. We especially are interested in strategies cells use to meet environmental challenges such as high temperature, the absence of oxygen, host defenses against pathogenic bacteria, or the presence of toxic compounds. Some of our studies are of particular species of the Archaea, which are microorganisms that can live under extreme conditions, such as at temperatures near the boiling point of. We also examine how, during evolution, selective environmental pressures cause cells to lose and gain certain genes. We approach all of these problems from a variety of experimental directions that employ techniques of molecular biology and biochemistry.
