The UK College of Medicine’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration culminated on Oct. 15 at Keeneland’s exclusive Sales Pavilion during the 50th Anniversary Signature Event. This event commemorated the rich history of the College with an emphasis on each of the past five decades’ food, sights, and sounds. The evening also included special presentations commemorating the College’s past, present and future, honoring former deans and unveiling a special birthday cake made by Charm City Cakes bakery from the Food Network’s show, “Ace of Cakes.”

September 23 marked not only the College’s Academic Convocation, but also the anniversary of the original Medical Center and College of Medicine dedication in 1960. After hearing “A Few Lessons for the Next 50 Years” from keynote speaker Lois Nora, M.D., J.D., MBA, former president of the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy and dean emeritus of the College of Medicine and former associate dean of Academic Affairs and Administration at the UK College of Medicine, a variety of awards were presented to deserving recipients.

The UK College of Medicine welcomed its newest students on Friday, August 6, at the 50th Anniversary White Coat Ceremony. The ceremony included a formal donning of the white coat and recitation of the Pledge of Professionalism. In honor of the College’s 50th anniversary, alumni representatives from the past five decades were present to coat the incoming class.

On Friday, April 16, three highly regarded speakers presented their thoughts to UK alumni, faculty, students and the community on "Preparing Physicians for the Next 50 Years." Speakers included: Dennis O’Leary, M.D., Paul H. O’Neill, MPA and Pauline W. Chen, M.D.

Community, business and university leaders became medical students for a day during the College of Medicine’s second Mini Medical School on Thursday, April 1. Attendees experienced everything from a white coat ceremony to clinical rotations to graduation in just one day.

Kentucky's legislators, the mayor of Lexington, and the secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services experienced medical school firsthand as "students" in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine's inaugural Legislative Mini-Medical School on Monday, Oct. 19. Legislators experienced – in one day – examples of the events and milestones medical students encounter in four years of training, from white coat ceremony to graduation.
