The College of Medicine seeks to develop
its basic science, clinical, and translational research
programs. The success of this effort will depend heavily upon
training physician scientists. The Physician-Scientist
Committee invites applications for the Physician-Scientist
Program. This program will provide an award of $50,000 per
year for three years. The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2005.
Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates for the Physician-Scientist Program may be new or
continuing faculty and must have:

an MD, PhD degree or MD degree with significant
research training;
·
an academic appointment as an assistant
professor or, in exceptional cases, an associate professor in
the Regular or Special Title Series;
·
an interest in developing an academic research
program; and
·
clinical privileges at the University of
Kentucky Hospital.

Application Process: A candidate
should submit the following materials to Dorothy Edwards,
College of Medicine Dean's Office, MN150, 800 Rose Street, UKMC 40536-0298. The dealine for submissions is
December 1, 2005:

a letter describing the candidate’s career
plans;
·
a research proposal (limited to ten pages,
single-spaced, 12-point font including figures, references,
and diagrams);
·
a letter from the faculty mentor who will guide
the candidate during the training period; and
·
a letter from the chair or division chief
indicating the source of funding for the research and
percentage of time that the candidate will have for research
during the three-year period of the award.

Review Criteria and Process: A
Physician-Scientist Committee will review the proposals and
credentials of applicants and will interview the most
promising applicants. The Committee will place particular
emphasis on the following:
1.
promise as an independent investigator based on prior
training and the research proposal;
2.
commitment by the chair or division chief to providing
appropriate time and funding for research; and
3.
appropriate selection of mentor.
The Committee will give preference to
faculty who began their first year of an academic appointment
in the 2003-2004 fiscal year and who have promise of
developing an outstanding research program. The Committee
will consider associate professors in exceptional cases.
Awardees will be reviewed annually will be expected to provide
a yearly progress report.
