Language barriers may often be the root of poor communication between patients and physicians and can weaken the quality of care achievable. The UK A.B. Chandler Hospital understands that effective communication with patients is essential to providing a high quality-standard of health care. To this end, UK HealthCare’s Center for Enterprise Quality and Safety Program for Equality Safety and Patient Rights provides language interpreters for patients who are unable to communicate effectively in English. Sign-language interpreters are also provided to patients who experience hearing loss that prevents them from verbally communicating effectively.

The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) has published the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care in effort to improve the quality and consistency of interpreting in health care as a means to supportequal access to health care for individuals with limited English proficiency.
