Jay A. Perman, M.D., Dean and Vice President for Clinical Affairs
Dean Perman oversees the entire medical school, which includes the education of future physicians and scientists, all clinical and basic science research, and the clinical services provided by UK physicians. Dean Perman is one of a few medical school deans in the United States who is also a practicing physician. Several days each month, he leads Dean's Clinic, treating pediatric gastroenterology patients while training medical students and residents inter-professional clinical care. Dr. Perman is also a professor in the Department of Pediatrics.

C. Darrell Jennings Jr., M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education
Dr. Jennings oversees all aspects of the Office of Medical Education, including medical student admissions, student affairs, curriculum, student evaluation and program assessment; Graduate Medical Education; the Clinical Skills Training and Assessment Center; and the combined degree programs: M.D./Ph.D., B.S./M.D., M.D./MBA, M.D./MPH. Dr. Jennings, a pathologist, is also professor and Director of Immunopathology, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Louis B. Hersh, Ph.D., Senior Associate Dean for Basic Science Affairs
Dr. Hersh advises the dean and works with the senior associate deans for research and medical education on matters of academic affairs and operations relating to the basic science departments. Dr. Hersh is the George Schwert professor and chair, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry.

C. William Balke, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Research
Dr. Balke oversees the development of the College’s research portfolio and its alignment with the University’s Top 20 Plan. His University and College responsibilities include leadership of the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science, several College intramural training programs, and departmental research training programs in collaboration with the senior associate dean for Basic Science Affairs. As a professor in the departments of Internal Medicine and Physiology, Dr. Balke maintains an NIH-funded research program focused on the identification of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction characteristic of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. In addition, he is a practicing cardiologist.

Carol Elam, Ed.D., Associate Dean for Admissions and Institutional Advancement
Dr. Elam oversees the recruitment and admission of medical students, serves as director of medical education research, and develops and promotes the advancement of the institutional image for the UK College of Medicine. Dr. Elam is a professor in the Department of Behavioral Science.

James Norton, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Area Health Education Centers and Community Outreach
Dr. Norton directs the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) and oversees the Medical Professions Placement Service. In addition, he serves as the dean’s liaison to community entities and community-based faculty. Dr. Norton is also a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and holds a joint appointment to the Department of Neurology.

Peter Gilbert, Associate Dean for Administration and Finance
Mr. Gilbert oversees the financial and administrative operations of the college. This includes the areas of budget and financial management, resource management, policies and procedures, space and facilities management, human resources, information technology, recruitment and retention. He supports grant and contract administration through financial and supplemental process oversight. Mr. Gilbert also serves as a liaison with department administrators.

Todd Cheever, M.D., Assistant Dean for Student Affairs
Dr. Cheever oversees all aspects of the Student Affairs Office, including Financial Aid, Student Services, Registrar, Humanities and Professional code Committees. He works directly with all medical students from the time they begin medical school until graduation providing academic and career counseling. Dr. Cheever is also an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry.

Terry D. Stratton, Ph.D., Assistant Dean, Student Assessment and Program Evaluation
Dr. Stratton coordinates evaluation and assessment activities within the College of Medicine – including test development/scoring and faculty/course/curricular evaluation. His office also oversees administration and scoring of the Clinical Performance Exam. Dr. Stratton is an assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Science.

Susan M. McDowell, M.D., Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education
Dr. McDowell serves as the assistant dean and designated institutional official for all the Graduate Medical Education training programs. As such she is responsible for program oversight and compliance with all accreditation standards and leading the institution’s GME improvement process. Dr. McDowell, a physiatrist, is an associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Jane Serumgard Harrison, Ph.D., Director, Integrated Biomedical Sciences; and Senior Assistant Dean for Graduate Education & Administration
Jane Serumgard Harrison, Ph.D., oversees the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Curriculum, College of Medicine interface with Graduate School, Postdoctoral Resource Office and supports the Postdoctoral Advisory Committee as well as serves as the contact for Master of Science in Medical Sciences program. She reviews OSPA Internal Approval Forms and develops Conflict of Interest management plans related to research awards and assists in grant development. Harrison also oversees projects for senior associate dean for research, the Shandong University-University of Kentucky exchange program and special projects for dean.

Sandra Jaros, Assistant Dean, Administration
Ms. Jaros is responsible for directing the administrative operations of the College of Medicine. This includes such items as administrative process development, improvement and enforcement. She also directs the information technology efforts for the College in conjunction with those of the UK HealthCare enterprise. Ms. Jaros is the department administrator for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
