Jay A. Perman, M.D. is Dean and Vice President for Clinical Affairs in the UK College of Medicine.
Dr. Perman, a pediatric gastroenterologist, is also a professor in the department of pediatrics.

C. William Balke, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Research, oversees and assures an optimal infrastructure for the
conduct and development of clinical research; oversees and coordinates the UKCRO, GCRC, K30, Physician Scientist and Dean’s
Clinical Scholars Programs; supports and consults on research training programs based in individual departments; and works
in collaboration with the senior associate dean for basic science affairs to promote the interface between clinical and basic
science research. Dr. Balke, a cardiologist, is a professor in the department of internal medicine, division of cardiovascular
medicine.

Carol Elam, Ed.D., Associate Dean for Admissions and Institutional Advancement, oversees the recruitment and
admission of medical students, serves as director of medical education research, and develops and promotes the advancement
of institutional image for the College of Medicine. Dr. Elam is a professor in the department of behavioral science.

Louis B. Hersh, Ph.D., Senior Associate Dean for Basic Science Affairs, advises the Dean and works with the senior
associate deans for research and medical education on matters of academic affairs and operations relating to the basic
science departments. Dr. Hersh is the George Schwert professor and chair, department of molecular and cellular biochemistry.

C. Darrell Jennings, Jr., M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, oversees all aspects of the Office of
Medical Education, including medical student admissions, student affairs, curriculum, student evaluation and program
assessment, the Clinical Skills Training and Assessment Center, and the combined degree programs: MD/PhD, BS/MD, MD/MBA,
MD/MPH. Dr. Jennings, a pathologist, is also professor and director of immunopathology, department of pathology and
laboratory medicine.

James Norton, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, AHEC, and Community Outreach, oversees graduate
medical education (residency programs) and serves as the ACGME designated institutional official. As AHEC program
administrator of the Chandler Medical Center, Dr. Norton directs the Area Health Education Centers and oversees the Medical
Professions Placement Service. In addition, he serves as the Dean’s liaison to community entities and community-based
faculty. Dr. Norton is also a professor in the department of psychiatry and holds a joint appointment to the department of
neurology.
