Research Opportunities for Medical Students
Students with a primary interest in pursuing academic medicine should consider applying to the M.D./Ph.D. Program. Information about this program is available on their Web site at http://www.mc.uky.edu/mdphd. The UK College of Medicine supports numerous research opportunities open to all medical students.
Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship
The Office of Student Affairs sponsors the Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship program for first-year, second-year, third-year, and incoming medical students. Information from faculty willing to sponsor students for the summer is distributed in the spring to eligible students. Opportunities are available in basic science, translational and public health research programs. Approximately 30 medical students participate in this program each summer.
Medical Student Research Travel Award
Medical students whose research has been accepted for presentation – poster presentation or oral presentation – at a national conference may apply for a Medical Student Research Travel Award to support the cost of conference attendance. Students may apply for a travel award in any year in which they are presenting at a national conference. However, only one travel award will be given to any one student in any one academic year.
General Clinical Research Center Mentored Medical Student Fellowship
The General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) provides fellowships in clinical research for medical and dental students. Interested students identify a principal investigator engaged in a GCRC-approved clinical protocol who will serve as mentor. In addition, they must commit to completing the GCRC fellowship curriculum designed to promote sound clinical research practices. Applications are accepted in March. Initial awards are for one year with the possibility of renewal.

Dean's Research Fellowship
The Dean's Research Fellowship consists of a one-year, full-time research experience for an exceptional student with a serious interest in research and a potential for a career in academic medicine. Students apply for the fellowship with a faculty sponsor by submitting a research plan similar in format to an intramural grant. This fellowship may follow a Summer Research Fellowship and be a continuation of that research. The fellowship period may commence at any time after the first year of study or even after the fourth year of medical school. The fellow will receive a stipend and may be eligible to receive UK tuition support equal to that of a half-time graduate student. However, the fellow may not apply graduate course credits, if any, toward M.D. degree requirements. This is a competitive fellowship that provides funding for one person per year.
Medical Student Research Award
The Medical Student Research Award is given annually to the graduating medical student with outstanding participation in and contribution to the field of research. Recipients of this award have an exemplary record of presentations and publications documenting their hard work and achievements as researchers during their medical school career. Students are nominated by faculty mentors and the recipient is selected by a faculty committee.
Student Research Day and the Groves Memorial Lecture
Each year, selected medical students present the results of their summer fellowship work during Student Research Day, sponsored by Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. Participants may have further opportunities to participate in regional and national research convocations. The program also includes the Richard and Monti Sue Groves Memorial Student Research Day Lecture, which is presented by a nationally renowned researcher. This annual academic event reinforces UK's role as a national academic research center.
