The College of Medicine maintains and staffs a Student Financial Aid Office in the Office of Medical Education to assist students in securing loans and scholarships and to coordinate aid that is provided by state or federal agencies, foundations, and religious and fraternal organizations. Basic information about student financial aid is provided below. Students interested in financial aid should contact the SFA Office to obtain the Student Financial Aid Handbook which contains additional information about available resources and application procedures. The SFA Office is also responsible for the disbursal process for all medical students. Financial aid is disbursed in the Medical Center as a convenience to students. The office is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The office operates routinely on an open-door policy; however, students who do not live in the Lexington area are encouraged to schedule an appointment. Please feel free to contact the office should you have questions or need assistance. Linda A. Gilbert, Director of Financial Aid Phone: 859-323-5261 Expenses

Student Financial Aid All students requesting financial assistance, both federal and institutional, must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA*. The FAFSA is available to be completed online or may be submitted as a paper version available in the SFA Office. The FAFSA Needs Analysis assembles a financial description of the resources and assets of the student and family and provides a Student Aid Report (SAR) to the student and the school. The SAR includes an expected family contribution (EFC). The priority deadline for filing the FAFSA is May 2nd; however, the form can be completed at anytime throughout the academic year when a student is seeking financial aid. Financial support is available through both scholarship and loan programs, and application procedures differ from program to program. The major resources are listed below. Scholarship Programs
Medical students also receive scholarship assistance from many private sources, i.e. Kentucky Community Service Programs, Military Health Professions Scholarships (U.S. Airforce, U.S. Army and U.S. Navy), National Health Service Corps Scholarship, etc. Loan Programs
Students have the option of participating in either the Federal Stafford or Direct Loan Programs (must select one). Students who select the Federal Direct Loan Program borrow their funds from the Department of Education. Students who select the Federal Stafford Loan Program borrow their funds from a lender, i.e. bank, credit union, etc. Typically, students who receive their loan funds from the Stafford Program use banks that are affiliated with the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA), The Student Loan People (KHESLC), and other participating Kentucky lenders, as well as various out-of-state lenders such as Medloans, MedPreferred, and Total Higher Education (THE). For assistance with the selection of a loan program and/or lenders, contact the SFA office. If you are applying for a Federal Stafford or Ford Federal Direct Loan you must complete and return a Financial Aid Request Form (First-Year/Transfer Students) or a 2005-06 Financial Aid Request Form (Upperclass Students) (PDF). Entrance Financial Aid interviews are conducted with all students who receive a student loan for the first time. All students who have received a student loan are also required to attend an Exit Financial Aid Interview where they are informed of their total debt, estimated monthly payment, rights and responsibilities as a borrower, deferment and repayment options, and loan forgiveness/repayment programs.
