OBJECTIVES, CONTENT, AND METHOD OF TEACHING: This elective will provide the medical student with a broad range of laparoscopic skills through different exercises and simulators. These training environments duplicate laparoscopic set-ups that will be encountered in the operating rooms.  There will also be a portion that is dedicated to the study and comprehension of the more common MIS procedures.  Instruction and lecture will be provided by on-line narrations and PowerPoint presentations.

The student will be able to shadow different surgeons at UK in the operating rooms under the guidance of doctors involved in the MIS program.  Furthermore, the student will be able to watch live cases that are narrated by the surgeon performing the operation.

The student will also be responsible for helping develop curriculum expansions to the existing intern curriculum by making PowerPoint presentations that outline different laparoscopic procedures including trocar placement, patient position, instruments, used, procedure, anatomy and different anatomical variations, and pre- and post-op care.

In sum, this is an elective comprised of clinical and research opportunities.  The student will gain experience with a broad range of advanced laparoscopic skills, including procedures spanning the GI tract and solid organ surgery.
