Overall Description and Goals: This course in interprofessional education and practice is designed to provide health professions students with a seminar-based forum within which to explore the characteristics and implications of interprofessional practice around one or more cross-cutting healthcare challenges (for Fall 2009 the topic will be Childhood Obesity).

OBJECTIVES

  1. Discuss a topic of general interest across health professions within an interprofessional context.
  2. Consider how interprofessional practice can positively impact the epidemiology, course, and implications of a specific public health issue for the individual patient and for the community.
  3. Describe how his/her chosen profession most appropriately should relate to other professions in order to facilitate effective interprofessional healthcare.

4.   Practice the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in order to be successful participants in an interprofessional team.
4.a.  Contribute to the development and knowledge of others.
4.b.  Effectively participate in an interprofessional team.

CONTENT AND METHODS OF TEACHING: Class forum will involve large and small group seminars and discussions, limited web-based activities, and 4 small group site visits within the Lexington service area.

EVALUATION CRITERIA: Small group activities and projects

ENROLLMENT LIMIT: 6, by invitation of the Dean of the College of Medicine or by student request and approval of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs (students who are interested in participating in this course should contact Dr. Jim Norton, Dr. Andrea Pfeifle, or Dr. Jennifer Brueckner)

CREDIT HOURS: 1 credit, students may arrange for additional credits if needed (contact Andrea Pfeifle at andrea.pfeifle@uky.edu)
