OBJECTIVES:

  • PLEASE NOTE: Specific content is subject to change. Dr. Pollack can provide more information when you see her for a signature on your registration form, or email her with your questions.
  • Understand the importance of injury in the lives of KY children through familiarity with basic epidemiology of pediatric injury (more than 63% of youth over age 1 die of injury in KY);
  • Experience how the public/families/elected officials perceive the role of injury in pediatric health;
  • Participate in planning and building of new playground at Mary Todd Park funded by a grant from the Allstate Foundation.
  • Have experiences that include reading, critical review of injury data, and participation in community events/professional teaching/injury prevention coalitions/contacts with state officials/involvement in whatever else our team is doing;
  • Possibility for more in-depth involvement in an aspect of injury epidemiology /prevention with publication according to interests of specific student;
  • Site visits to child care, playgrounds, car seat check-ups and legislature, etc.
  • Community activities this semster may include efforts to get the booster bill passed, and community projects to help to prevent violent death in children and child abuse

CONTENT AND METHOD OF TEACHING: Combination of directed reading, individual contact with me, opportunity to participate in community activities with other members of the Pediatric and Adolescent Injury Prevention Program, and possibility of injury data analysis with guidance of PAIPP data analyst.

REQUIREMENTS: Attendance, acquisition of basic knowledge as outlined above plus whatever is agreed to initial contract based upon student's interest.

CREDIT HOURS: 1 per hour of contact each week

MEETING DATE/TIME: At mutual convenience

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 2
