COURSE TITLE: History of Microbiology

C.T. Ambrose, M.D.
MN 457

OBJECTIVES:  to complement the second year course, MI 822 -- Immunity, Infection, and Disease – with information about the early history of these subjects and about the impact of infectious diseases on civilizations.  MI-822 covers the basic microbiology & immunology and the clinical implications of human pathogens, but it leaves little time for historical aspects of these fascinating subjects.  This elective will focus on some classic discoveries and personages in microbiology about which a broadly educated physicians should know.  Also history has a curious habit of repeating itself: witness the parallels between the great plagues of the past and that of AIDS today.  The first session deals with beer (in an historical sense), from whence arose the science of microbiology.
