INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:

  1. Increase awareness of a broader worldview of communities with different lifestyles, healthcare systems and political systems.
  2. Prepare students for an international experience in their clinical years in a country with limited resources.

OBJECTIVES: Medical students who take this course will (in partnership with the CPH):

  1. discuss important health issues from around the globe;
  2. gain insight into the relationship between cultural diversity and health;
  3. gain insight into the relationship between environmental conditions and health;
  4. compare different methods of financing and governing different types of health systems;
  5. compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of different health systems;
  6. describe the role of wealth and poverty as determinants of health;
  7. discuss why various tactics and reforms have been successful or unsuccessful in other nations;
  8. describe how the health priorities that are established by donor nations and organizations impact international health issues;
  9. discuss the role of gender in healthcare; and
  10. discuss the role of Western development on global healthcare.

CLASS ACTIVITIES:
Students from COM and CPH will participate in small group activities and discussion with faculty relating to global health issues from the assigned readings and/or the selected DVD/video segments relating to the topic for that week. Some course elements will be posted to Blackboard for students to review/complete. Class time will mainly consist of interactive discussions in order to provide students with a broad understanding of global health.
