OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

• learn basic Medical Spanish vocabulary and phrases with emphasis on the history, physical, and health information for common medical situation;
• describe health issues which are common or unique to various Hispanic groups, with particular emphasis on Hispanics in the Kentucky area and;
• discuss the importance of understanding one's own individual concepts of race, ethnicity and culture and how those concepts shape interactions and decision-making for health professionals.

CONTENT AND METHODS OF TEACHING : The course will rely heavily on interactive techniques involving practice in conversational Spanish. Patient discussions will center around case presentations of common medical problems. Interactive discussions will be based on readings that provide a broad range of cultural competence concepts with emphasis on factors that influence interactions and outcomes when working with diverse populations. There will be at least one field trip during the semester.
REQUIREMENTS : Some basic background in Spanish is preferred. The instructors can discuss this with the individual student if there are any questions about language skill level needed.
