Behavioral Medicine and Chronic Pain Management COURSE TITLE: Behavioral Medicine and Chronic Pain Management COURSE DIRECTOR: Mark Etscheidt, Ph.D. OBJECTIVES: This course provides students with the opportunity to participate in the interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment of patients with chronic pain at the UK Pain Management Center. Students will develop an awareness and understanding of chronic pain and treatment approaches utilized in its management. CONTENT AND METHOD OF TEACHING: Students will participate on an interdisciplinary team consisting of physicians (faculty, fellows, and residents), psychologist, and nurses. Conditions commonly seen at the center include chronic back pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, cancer pain, phantom limb pain, headache, post-traumatic musculoskeletal pain, and deafferentation syndromes. Students will have the opportunity to observe and participate in various treatment approaches used with these pain syndromes, including medication management, nerve blocks, relaxation therapies, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Teaching format will primarily consist of observing and participating with faculty and staff in diagnostic and treatment activities at the Pain Management Center. Assigned reading will be correlated with clinical experiences. EVALUATION OR REQUIREMENTS: Regular attendance and completion of assigned readings. CREDIT HOURS: 2 MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 2 |
