Primary Care Student Loan Program

The Primary Care Loan (PCL) Program is federally funded. Primary Care is defined as Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, General Pediatrics, or a specialty in Preventive Medicine/Public Health. Recipients must agree to:

  • enter and complete a residency program in Primary Care within 4 years following completion of residency training; and
  • practice in primary care until the loan is repaid in full (10 years with extension at the discretion of the school)

Based on compliance, the interest rate is 5% (paid by the federal government) during in-school and approved deferment periods. In the case of non-compliance with the PCL agreement, the interest will be 18%, beginning on the date of non-compliance.

To be considered for the PCL program, you must submit parent income and asset information on the 2009-2010 FAFSA . You will also need to provide a copy of your parent's federal 2008 taxes. Do not submit estimated tax information on the FAFSA.

If you want to apply for the PCL, complete the PCL Request Form (form-fill). The form may be completed on your computer, printed, and then signed. The deadline for submitting it to the Financial Aid Office is May 1st.

All recipients must demonstrate financial need for PCL awards and the amount of the award is dependent on annual available funds.
