Abraham Flexner Master Educator Awards Categories

Fulfillment of the criteria in one or more award categories is required in order to be eligible for Master Educator recognition. All applicants must be able to adequately document contributions in education related to the desired award category and equivalent to the sample activities listed. Suitability of activities for recognition will be determined by the Center for Excellence in Medical Education (CEME) Board of Directors.

Submissions are accepted that fit the spirit of the category. The lists of examples that follow each category description are only examples and are not meant to be exhaustive.

A. Educational Leadership and Administration: This award will be given to faculty members who document a broad array of leadership skills or proficiency in the administration of educational programs. Three activities of different types are required in order to establish breadth and depth of contributions in this area. Two activities must include service to the College of Medicine.

Examples:

  • Course/clerkship/residency/graduate program director for at least two years
  • Departmental education committee member (e.g. steering committee, graduate student committee, student progress and promotions committee or student admissions committee)
  • Curriculum committee/subcommittee member
  • Editor of a journal related to teaching and education
  • Publications reviewer of at least five manuscripts
  • Education association or society leadership, including committee or subcommittee leadership
  • Consulting in medical education
  • Invited addresses on medical education

B. Outstanding Teaching Contribution or Mentorship: This award will be given to faculty members who document sustained quality, quantity, and diversity of direct instruction and/or mentorship throughout the educational program. Evidence of outstanding teaching quality and/or mentoring should be evidenced by examples in your Teaching Portfolio. Teaching evaluations from at least two years in one course and at least two courses must be provided along with letter(s) of recommendation from students, mentors, residents, course director and/or department chair. Nature of involvement must be described.

Examples:

  • Teaching by multiple methods
  • Teaching in multiple courses/clerkships/programs
  • Teaching at multiple levels (medical, graduate, resident or peer)
  • Mentoring of fellows, graduate students, residents, students, advisees, summer research assistants and/or participants in the Science Outreach Center Program
  • Supervising Master’s thesis or Dissertation works of a medical student
  • Osler instructor for four years
  • Directing graduate student research through completion of a doctoral degree

C. Educational Innovation and Curriculum Development: This award will be given to faculty members who document significant improvements that they made in a course/clerkship/program. To fulfill the requirement, evidence of activities in different areas or significant contribution in a single area must be demonstrated and documentation submitted.

Examples:

  • Case authorship: Authorship or major contribution to development of case(s) in a course, clerkship, or residency e.g. PBL case author or substantial contribution to PBL case(s), CPX case(s), and/or clinical correlate(s)
  • Computer-assisted instruction program author
  • Authorship of freestanding audiovisual materials developed for student independent study (Does not include slides developed solely for lectures or presentations.)
  • Design and development of a new course or substantial modification (major revision) of an existing course.

D. Educational Evaluation and Research: This award will be given to faculty members who document substantial contributions in educational research or evaluation. Three activities of different types are required in order to establish breadth and depth of contributions in this area.

Examples:

  • Course/clerkship testing coordinator
  • Peer evaluation system
  • Publication(s) reviewer of quality education research and evaluation manuscripts
  • Substantial contributions to education research and evaluation through grant and/or contract activity
  • Review of courses or other educational activities

E. Faculty Development in Education: This award will be given to faculty members who document growth of their educational knowledge/skills and their contribution to the educational development of other faculty. Significant evidence of participation in self-improvement seminars, meetings related to medical education and conducting faculty development workshops in education.

Examples:

  • Participate in education conference sessions (e.g., attendance at regional or national medical education meetings, such as the annual meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges, attendance at a teaching skills conference, etc.)
  • Participate in education workshops (e.g., attendance at a problem-based learning tutor-training workshop, attendance at a test item writing workshop, etc.)
  • Participate in education grand rounds (e.g., attendance at a grand rounds specifically devoted to the enhancement of teaching, educational evaluation, educational research, etc.)
  • Participate in course work related to education or skills
  • Conduct faculty development presentations, workshops, or grand rounds regarding education (e.g., conduct workshops for colleagues on problem-based learning, clinical teaching, test item writing, etc.)
