MEDICAL EDUCATION

Admissions

Aware that the B.S./M.D. Accelerated Course of Study is demanding, students interested in joining the program should exhibit scholarship, maturity, stability, flexibility, compassion, curiosity, and a record of service to others. Admission into the program is highly competitive as no more than 5-10 undergraduates will be accepted into the program each year. Admission into this program does not guarantee admission to the UK Medical School, but successful completion of the curriculum, exceptional performance on the MCAT, demonstrated maturity, and continued commitment to the medical field will make students very competitive applicants for admission. Furthermore, students who choose not to complete the curriculum or who are not immediately admitted to Medical School will be fully eligible to apply in a later year.

The ACT or SAT scores and high school GPA will be of preliminary importance in evaluating an applicant’s credentials. Applicants must also present evidence of exceptional performance in a demanding high school curriculum. Successful applicants will typically meet all of the following criteria:

  • High School Grade Point Average*: 3.89
  • ACT Average*: 33
  • SAT Average*: >/=1250

*Statistics taken from entering undergraduate class of 2007

Additional factors considered include maturity, range and depth of extracurricular involvement, as well as a commitment to the health sciences. After preliminary screening of the applicants by the B.S./M.D. Admissions Committee, additional information may be requested before the Committee makes its final selection. Applicants will be notified by email.

Applications

Students interested in joining the B.S./M.D. Accelerated Course of Study should complete a UK Application for Undergraduate Admission early in the student’s senior year declaring Biology as their major. A Supplemental Application (PDF) to the B.S./M.D. Accelerated Course of Study must also be completed. Two Letters of Recommendation (PDF) are also required and should address substantive academic and intellectual development accomplishments. Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly to the program from the referee. Students should also submit copies of their transcripts as well as copies of their ACT and/or SAT scores. (Official transcripts and/or score reports are not necessary.)

Applications to the B.S./M.D. Accelerated Course of Study should be completed by February 1. Those applications completed by the February 1 deadline will be reviewed early in February, and those that pass the initial review, will be scheduled for an interview sometime between February 15 through March 15. A final decision will then be made, and applicants will be notified late in March.

Please submit the Secondary Application, 2 letters of recommendation, and copies of all transcripts (high school and any UK transcripts) as well as ACT and/or SAT scores.

(It is also important to note that admission to the UK Honors Program is a completely separate application process. More information can be found at the Honors Program Web site.)

Tuition and Fees

Students are responsible for payment of all tuition and fees for the B.S. and M.D. programs, but are eligible for a full range of need-based and merit-based programs available to undergraduate and medical students.
