Image of Medical Students using the Human Patient SimulatorSimulation in Curriculum

With the inception of its Simulation Center in 2004, UK placed itself in the forefront of medical schools that provide opportunities for students to practice clinical skills on human patient simulators before interacting with real patients. Since that time, UK College of Medicine has pioneered the integration of patient simulators and standardized patients into educational encounters that are realistic but risk-free.

For instance, residents in Anesthesiology, a challenging area to master, are able to administer sedatives, listen to heart sounds, monitor breathing rates, and accordingly adjust their procedures and treatment. These required learning scenarios, incorporated throughout undergraduate and graduate medical education, improve students’ competence and confidence and allow them to master intricate and high-risk skills at a level far beyond what many universities offer. The UK College of Medicine Simulation Center is becoming the model of teaching for the next century.
