How To Apply

General Guidelines
- Try to have all of the prerequisites for entrance into the University of Kentucky College of Medicine completed by your junior undergraduate year of college.
- Take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) early in your junior undergraduate year. This will give you enough time to repeat the test should you wish to improve your scores.
Note: We do not accept MCAT scores that are over two years old.
- Try to complete your American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) Application in June of the year prior to intended matriculation. The earlier you complete this application, the earlier you will be sent a Secondary Application.
Note: All Kentucky residents and selected out-of-state applicants receive Secondary Applications. For more information about screening criteria for out-of-state applicants, please contact Kim Scott at 859-323-6161 or by e-mail at kstahlma@email.uky.edu.
- Make sure that your letters of recommendation arrive at AMCAS in a timely fashion. Please read http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/amcaslettersfaq.htm for detailed instructions on this new procedure.
- Send your Secondary Application fee in as early as possible. Most delays occur while waiting for either your $50 application fee or your letters of evaluation.

The AMCAS Application
AMCAS® (the American Medical College Application Service) — provided by the AAMC® (the Association of American Medical Colleges) — enables applicants from very diverse locations to simplify the application process by creating a unified way to apply to many medical schools with one single electronic application. That being said, AMCAS will be your first formal step into the applicant pool. When working on your application, please pay close attention to detail and make sure that all the information is correct. Instead of submitting transcripts to more than 10 medical colleges for review, they are sent to AMCAS for a verification process. Applications are then forwarded to any and all colleges to which an applicant wishes to apply. A final transcipt will be requested later by the University of Kentucky upon matriculation. Program types available for University of Kentucky College of Medicine applicants to select from include:
The Secondary Application
Our Secondary Application is a supplement to the AMCAS® application. We offer this application to all Kentucky residents and selected non-Kentucky residents. Secondary applications will be sent after receipt of the AMCAS application. This application is tailored more closely to the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine. If you have been offered this application, you will be notified via email (on the account listed in your AMCAS application). In addition, there is a $50 fee that accompanies the Secondary Application. This can be paid via cash, check, money order and Visa or MasterCard. Please be aware that spam filters on your e-mail account may interfere with Secondary Application notification.
Please note: If you have been offered the secondary application and are having trouble logging in, please be aware that the login information must exactly match the information as you entered it into the AMCAS application. If you need additional help, please contact us.
Criminal Background Check
The UKCOM Secondary application currently requires a response to the following questions:
- Have you ever been subject to disciplinary action in any of the schools, colleges, or universities you have attended?
- Have you ever been convicted of a criminal or military offense (other than a minor traffic violation)?
In addition, the University of Kentucky College of Medicine will require students who are selected for admissions to undergo a criminal background check. For the 2010 application cycle, the University of Kentucky College of Medicine has contracted with the Association of American Medical Colleges to participate in an AMCAS-facilitated criminal background check service. For more information on the AMCAS program, check their web site at http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/background.htm. For the University of Kentucky College of Medicine criminal background check policy, please refer to the Student Criminal Background Check Policy for the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.
Letters of Evaluation
Letters of Evaluation may be gathered by one of three methods and must be accompanied by the AMCAS Letter Request form. See http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/amcaslettersfaq.htm for detailed instructions on this new procedure. The AMCAS Letter Request form is only accessible during the AMCAS application process and provides proper identification to ensure accurate matching of the letter to the applicant file. All letters must be submitted directly to AMCAS and not to the University of Kentucky. Your school may participate in electronic submission of these letters through Virtual Evals or Interfolio.
- If your school has a premed committee, you must use their recommendation process and forms. The applicant must download the AMCAS Letter Request form for the committee to submit in conjunction with its recommendation.
- A premed advisor may furnish a composite evaluation compiled from contributing faculty at your school. If your school has no evaluation form, please provide UK’s online form from the UK secondary site to the advisor. The AMCAS Letter Request form must also accompany the composite evaluation.
- If there is no committee or advisor, we require that you provide at least one of the three recommendations from faculty in your major area of concentration and at least one from a science area. (Teaching assistants and graduate assistants are notacceptable). These letters must be accompanied by both the AMCAS Letter Request form and UK’s online form from the UK secondary site.
Instructions for the submission of letters may be found at http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/amcaslettersfaq.htm. If you cannot provide letters by any of these methods, please contact our office at kymedap@uky.edu to address your specific situation.

Transfer and International Students
Transfer acceptance is limited to the third year on a space-available basis. Transfer spaces are rarely available due to a very low attrition rate. All transfer applicants should be currently enrolled in good academic standing at an LCME accredited medical school. Transfer applications from non-LCME accredited medical schools, offshore medical schools and osteopathic schools will not be considered.
The University of Kentucky College of Medicine considers international applicants with very strong academic records in the same way as any other non-resident applicant. At least one full year of study in a regionally accredited U.S. school is strongly recommended. International students who are offered admission to the UK will be required to submit documentation of ability to finance one full year of study before being allowed to matriculate.
