In 2006, Lexington ranked 13th in Kiplinger's 50 Smart Places to Live based on factors such as cost of living and housing, quality health care, low crime rate, economic vitality, and quality of life (weather, cultural amenities and transportation). In a recent survey of "Best Places for Postdocs" conducted by The Scientist, the University of Kentucky ranked tenth among all research universities. The top-ranking institutions all possessed a common culture of collaboration and a commitment to teaching, as well as an emphasis on training and career counseling.
