  • NIH MD/PHD Individual Fellowships
The purpose of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (Kirschstein-NRSA) is to provide support to individuals for combined MD/PhD and other dual doctoral degree training (e.g. DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD). The participating Institutes award this Kirschstein-NRSA individual fellowship (F30) to qualified applicants with the potential to become productive, independent, highly trained physician-scientists and other clinician-scientists, including patient-oriented researchers in their scientific mission areas. This funding opportunity supports individual predoctoral F30 fellowships with the expectation that these training opportunities will increase the number of future investigators with both clinical knowledge and skills in basic, translational or clinical research.

    NIH Intramural MD/PHD Partnership
The NIH MD/PhD partnership program provides funding, advising and clinical activities for MD/PhD students electing to pursue Ph.D. Training in one of NIH's graduate partnership programs or an individual partnership arrangement with a graduate department at a students medical school. The program has openings for second and third year medical students wanting to transition to M.D./Ph.D. training in the summer of 2010 and this year there are a limited number of places are available for current first year medical students wanting to transition to Ph.D. training in 2011. This option may be useful for students qualified for M.D./Ph.D. training that you cannot accommodate scientifically in your own M.D./Ph.D. Program. Note that as a matter of policy, we do not accept applications from currently funded M.D./Ph.D. Students without permission and discussion with the University M.D./Ph.D. Program Director. For more about the M.D./Ph.D. partnership for those of you not already familiar with it, please consult GPP. Please refer interested students students to email us to obtain more information or to participate in upcoming conference calls about this program. Applications are due January 4, 2010.

    The NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program
We now have over 50 M.D./Ph.D. partnership students and one of the most popular and compatible graduate programs is the The NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program. The OxCam program is is an accelerated program with no standard curriculum or required coursework. Rather, each student pursues an individualized course of study in which thesis work is initiated at the beginning of the first year. The thesis project is carried out as a collaboration between two labs, with half the research undertaken in a lab NIH and half at one of the UK universities. Each student is mentored by a senior scientist at each location. Please refer interested students students to email us to obtain more information or to participate in a conference call about the program. Applications are due January 4, 2010.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) NIH Research Scholars Program
The HHMI Scholars program sponsors students to come to NIH for one year after M2 or M3 for an intensive mentored research experience and residential living on the NIH campus. Applications are due January 10, 2010.

The Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP)
The CRTP sponsors students to come to NIH for one year after M3 for a translational research experience in a lab and/or clinical setting. Clinical teaching rounds and a weekly course in clinical trial design and biostatistics are also provided. Applications are due January 15, 2010.
