New Supervisor Orientation

  1. All newly hired supervisors, managers, directors, and administrators are required to complete all requirements for any newly hired staff person.

  2. In addition, all supervisors, managers, directors, and administrators within the University are required within 90 days of hire or promotion to attend SuperVision, a week-long program presented by Human Resources Development.

  3. All newly hired or promoted supervisors, managers, directors, and administrators within the Hospital are required to complete the HealthCare Supervision series between the 3rd and 12th month of assuming the supervisory position in the hospital.

Healthcare SuperVision

Healthcare SuperVision is the educational component of an orientation program designed for newly hired or promoted hospital supervisors, managers, directors, or administrators.  The entire orientation program consists of four components.

  1. Leadership Orientation Competencies
The direct supervisor of the new leader, will give the new supervisor a copy of the Leadership Orientation Competency form either during the interviewing process or immediately upon hire or promotion.
The new leader will use the form to do a self-assessment of their knowledge-base at hire.
The form will be a guide for learning the new leader.

  2. Preceptorship

The direct supervisor of the new leader will assign a Preceptor to the newly hired or promoted leader.

The Preceptor should be on the same level of leadership as the new leader (if possible), and should work in the same service area.

The Preceptor agrees to work with the new leader for the first 6 months.

The Preceptor is responsible for helping the new leader in 3 specific areas:

Socialization into the environment of the hospital and the specific work area.

Area-specific education on specific skills and knowledge needed by the new leader.  The competency form will serve as a guide.

Assisting the direct supervisor in evaluating the abilities of the new leader to meet the identified competencies.

  1. Healthcare SuperVision

  2. Formal Assessment of Competencies

 Details coming soon.
