Research Telemedicine
The telehealth network has become an important tool in Kentucky healthcare research initiatives. The network allows for the extension of clinical research to rural healthcare facilities outside of the University Medical Centers. Some examples of these programs include:
1. Joint grant writing of an NIH program to study stroke protocols between the UK and the University of Michigan. The research teams met dozens of times via the network to strategize on the project.
2. Planning and implementation of the Marty Driesler Cancer Project to extend top level cancer research, screening and treatment to rural healthcare facilities
3. Using telehealth in the home to connect hospitalized Bone Marrow Transplant patients to their families to determine how this family connection may improve the mental status and the physical condition of these medical fragile patients.
