Telehealth is the use of communications technology to extend healthcare resources to those in need. Kentucky TeleCare utilizes communications technologies, especially interactive videoconference systems to connect rural patients and clinicians to the healthcare resources at the University of Kentucky. Patients in rural Kentucky may connect to a UK specialist, via the telehealth network, from their community healthcare facility. University physicians can perform physical examinations through the system, using specialized cameras, electronic stethoscopes and other medical peripheral devices. There are over 100 telehealth sites in Kentucky to help improve access to care for all Kentuckians The Kentucky TeleCare Network uses videoconference technology and medical devices, such as electronic stethoscopes to bring patients from rural Kentucky together with University of Kentucky physicians, helping reduce the need for travel. With the use of high speed communication lines, Kentucky TeleCare is able to bring specialists and patients together, thus allowing the patient to get the treatment he or she needs without leaving their community. As a part of the UK College of Medicine, Kentucky TeleCare assumes a leadership role in addressing the healthcare needs of the commonwealth and to be preeminent among medical schools in selected areas of education and service. |
