Drug Overdose

Drug overdose is an ongoing public health issue in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. According to 2013 CDC data, Kentucky had the 2nd highest age-adjusted drug overdose fatality rate in the United States, at 23.7 deaths per 100,000 population. The corresponding U.S. rate was 13.8 per 100,000 population. Kentucky experienced a 50% increase in heroin-related overdose deaths from year 2012 to year 2013. Pharmaceutical opioids and benzodiazepines continue to be the most commonly abused drugs leading to drug overdose hospitalizations. Total charges associated with hospital treatment of Kentucky resident drug overdoses were $129.4 million in 2013.
